The play runs from March 5 to 14 in the Malaspina Theatre.

The story of a poet whose wit and courage helps him navigate love, friendship and rivalry comes to life at VIU this month with the VIU Theatre department’s production of Cyrano de Bergerac.

“This has been on my bucket list for many years,” said Director Leon Potter. “Cyrano rivals Romeo and Juliet when it comes to love stories.”

Potter believes the play still hold timeliness and relevance today.

“The world is filled with ‘hook-up’ culture and the concept of passion and romance have thinned, so I feel this show is a wonderful statement on the depth of love and laughter that resides in all of us.”

The VIU production uses a newer translation by Barry Kornhauser that preserves the original’s poetic verse while sounding natural to modern audiences, Potter said. It remains faithful to the original time period, allowing the story to speak for itself.

Audiences can expect swordfights, laughter and chivalry throughout the show.

“The students are working hard and doing amazing work,” said Potter.

He hopes audiences come away from it with “an appreciation that some of the most amazing stories can be found through history.”

Tickets can be purchased on Showpass.
