What: Tough – VIU Theatre department’s studio play

When: October 3 to 5

Where: VIU’s Mike Taugher Studio (Building 330, Room 109), Nanaimo campus

Friends Tina, Jill and Bobby are navigating the challenges of life after high school when Tina, Bobby’s girlfriend, announces an unexpected pregnancy.

After the bombshell, the three must face the realities of life. Their story unfolds in the one-act play Tough by Canadian playwright George F. Walker. Tough, a dark comedy, is this year’s fall studio play presented by Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) Theatre department.

“The theme of this play is how we all set up dreams and hopes for ourselves and then life will smack you back and say too bad and everything you planned suddenly goes out the window,” said Ross Desprez, the play’s director and a VIU Theatre Professor. “It’s about how fate takes over and you can’t always get what you want.”

Tough shows at the Mike Taugher Studio on October 3 at 7:30 pm, October 4 at noon and 7:30 pm, and October 5 at 2 pm and 7:30 pm. The Mike Taugher Studio (Building 330, Room 109) is an intimate performance space that seats about 30 people.

Tickets are by donation and are available on Showpass. Proceeds from the show will go to Power Up Education to provide a free teen sexual health workshop.

The play contains strong language and adult themes.
