Where: Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) Malaspina Theatre, Building 310, Nanaimo campus

What does it take to create a kelp farm off the coast of Vancouver Island? Frances Ward, a self-professed “seaweed nerd” and adventurer is determined to find out. She sets out to build one of the first farms of its kind in BC. The documentary Send Kelp!, produced by Back Road Productions, follows Ward’s journey and the challenges and joys she encounters along the way.

Ward consults scientists, wild harvesters and entrepreneurs, including experts from VIU, to help establish her farm. VIU researchers, staff and students are grateful to have worked with Ward and filmmakers throughout the filmmaking process.

A screening of Send Kelp! is on June 8 at VIU’s Malaspina Theatre. Doors open at 6 pm and the screening starts at 7:15 pm. Before the screening attendees can check out ocean-related educational and research displays in the lobby. There will also be a Q&A with the filmmakers and VIU researchers after the film.
