January 9, 2020 - 10:00am

A message from Dr. Deb Saucier, President and Vice-Chancellor and Irlanda Gonzalez Price, Associate-Vice President, Student Affairs

We would like to share our deep sadness for the loss of the victims on the Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 plane crash and our thoughts are with their friends, families and extended community.

We want to reassure everyone that our community did not lose any students or employees. However, the university community across Canada was deeply impacted and people at VIU have ties to these communities and are feeling the loss. Universities Canada released a statement which we wanted to share with everyone:

Canada’s universities join in mourning the Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 crash victims. We are deeply saddened by this loss of life and potential. Universities across the country are working to support the families and friends of those who perished, many of whom were students, faculty and others connected to the university community.

We want to remind you of the services and supports available to you and encourage anyone who is impacted to access these supports. If you notice anyone who is struggling, please reach out and suggest they get help.

Students

Counselling and other services for students are provided in VIU’s Student Affairs (Building 200, Third Floor). You can also access other resources in the community such as the 24-Hour Crisis Line that has text, chat and phone support.

Employees

Employees can access supports at any time through Homewood Health by calling toll-free at 1-800-663-1142.
