From the Provost’s Desk: Program suspensions

VIU Nanaimo campus aerial

Dear VIU community,

As shared in our June 5 update, I’m writing to follow up on the status of the proposed program suspensions at Vancouver Island University. On June 11, the Board of Governors held an extraordinary meeting, called by the Board Chair, and approved five program suspensions. This decision follows a recommendation from Senate in accordance with our standard governance process.

The list of affected programs and additional details are available on our Program Changes webpage

Students currently enrolled in the suspended programs will continue to receive the academic support they need to complete their studies and graduate. In cases where additional support is required, we will work directly with individual students to identify appropriate completion pathways. Impacted students will be contacted by their programs with specific information and next steps.

As outlined in Procedure 31.15.004, suspended programs may be considered for reinstatement within four years of their suspension date, provided that the program identifies and receives approval for any necessary curriculum changes. I’ll be working closely with the deans and program leads to ensure they have a clear understanding of the requirements for program reinstatement. Programs inactive beyond four years are considered cancelled and must follow the New Program Development process to be reintroduced. The suspension mechanism is intentionally used to allow time for this important academic renewal work.

I want to thank each of you for the continued dedication and care you bring to VIU. Your commitment to our students and each other is essential. While times of transformation can be challenging, I’m confident that these decisions will help position VIU to continue to meet the evolving needs of our students and communities – now and into the future.

Sincerely,

Claire Grogan, PhD (she/her)
Acting Provost and Vice-President, Academic
Vancouver Island University
