A message from Emily Huner, Acting President and Vice-Chancellor and David Paterson, AVP, DEHR.
Dear VIU community,
June marks National Indigenous History Month across Canada, a time to reflect, learn and honour the diverse cultures, histories and knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. At Vancouver Island University, we acknowledge the responsibility that comes with being situated on the traditional lands of the Snuneymuxw, Quw’utsun, Tla’amin, Snaw-naw-as and Qualicum First Nations. We are guests here, and we remain committed to listening, learning and acting in ways that respect Indigenous rights, title and governance.
At VIU, we raise our hands in gratitude to the Elders-in-Residence, Indigenous students, faculty and staff who guide us, not only during this month, but every day, with essential perspectives, lived experiences and cultural knowledge that enrich our learning environment and help us on our journey of Truth and Reconciliation. Their presence and voices continue to challenge VIU to do better, to move beyond statements and policies toward actions that reflect true partnerships and shared decision-making.
Through our work to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), and through meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities that support co-created programming, student success and mutual understanding, we work to deepen our commitments to our Indigenous partners.
One example is the recent reopening and expansion of Shq’apthut – A Gathering Place. Created through years of advocacy and relationship-building, this space is more than a building. It represents cultural safety, ceremony, connection and belonging — and signals the growing presence of Indigenous ways of knowing and being at VIU.
As we approach National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, we invite you to reflect on your own role in advancing reconciliation, and to engage in the opportunities being offered this month, including the Relational Lunch and Learn hosted by the Office of Indigenous Education and Engagement (OIEE) on June 23. This is a time to gather, enjoy soup and bannock, and reflect together on the learning resources shared throughout the month. More details will be shared soon in the VIU Digest.
We also encourage you to:
- Explore reading materials curated by OIEE that will be shared soon or pop by OIEE to borrow a book.
- Attend local Indigenous-led events (see Indigenous Tourism BC).
- Participate in community conversations, workshops and experiences.
- Visit Shq’apthut and connect with the cultural events and supports available there.
Reconciliation is not a simple act; it is a long journey that requires all of us. We encourage you to walk with care, humility and commitment to building relationships grounded in respect, reciprocity and responsibility. Let’s continue learning from Indigenous Peoples past and present and continue to walk together in a shared path forward.
Sincerely,
Emily Huner, CPA, CMA, MBA (she/her)
