I am deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred on the University of Waterloo campus. Our collective hearts and thoughts are with those who were directly or indirectly impacted by this deplorable incident.

Let me be unequivocally clear: violence has no place within the academic community. Post-secondary institutions are to be sanctuaries of learning, growth, and exploration, where students come to expand their minds, challenge assumptions, welcome fresh perspectives and make deep connections with their institution and people around them as they prepare for a brighter future.

Post-secondary institutions must foster an inclusive and nurturing atmosphere, which extends past the border of the institution. We must all actively promote resiliency, understanding, and empathy, while simultaneously denouncing any form of aggression or harm that jeopardizes the well-being of our community members.

To combat violence effectively, we must first acknowledge its presence and create an environment where those impacted feel comfortable coming forward. I implore us to support all who have been affected by violence to provide them with the necessary resources, empathy, and guidance they may need.

Together, we must stand united against all forms of gender violence, ensuring safety, dignity, and equality for all gendered minorities. We can create a community that stands as an example of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and collaborative learning. Let us recommit ourselves to these values and work tirelessly towards a brighter future for all.

Sincerely,

Dr. Deborah Saucier
President and Vice-Chancellor
Vancouver Island University
