From Classroom to Career: Caitlin Lundgren
As a Radio and Digital Account Executive with Pattison Media in Nanaimo, Caitlin Lundgren spends her days helping local businesses share their stories and connect with their communities.
It’s turned out to be the perfect fit for Caitlin, who graduated from Vancouver Island University with a Bachelor of Arts, Major in Psychology in 2021.
“In the Psychology program, I developed a strong understanding of human behaviour, communication and motivation – all of which directly support my work in sales,” she says. “Some of the most meaningful experiences I had at VIU came from getting involved in things I didn’t originally plan for, like research, student leadership and community events. VIU played a big role in helping me build a sense of home here and it means a lot to be able to give back to the community that’s supported my growth.”
We caught up with Caitlin to learn more about her experience at VIU and how it’s translated to the workforce.
Why did you choose VIU for your education?
I realized the value of education after finishing a gap year working abroad. I knew I wanted more opportunities and flexibility when it came to building a career. Pursuing further education felt like the best next step to open more doors and set myself up for the future. I knew I wanted to stay on the Island close to home, but I was also looking for a university with smaller class sizes. Somewhere I could get involved in the school community, build real connections with my professors and have the chance to do research as an undergrad.
Tell us a bit about your experience at VIU.
I made the most of my time at VIU by getting involved in a range of activities, including conducting research, tutoring statistics and participating in both the Psychology Club and the Rotaract Club. I also worked for VIU in multiple roles that allowed me to support and engage with prospective and new students. I began as a University Transition Planning Assistant, where I helped organize and host new student orientation for more than 600 students. Later, I became a Student Engagement Champion and then transitioned into the newly created role of Campus Visit Coordinator.
Was there anything that surprised you about your VIU experience?
One unexpected benefit I discovered after becoming a student was how connected I felt to the campus community. I initially enrolled for academic reasons, but getting involved in clubs, research and student leadership roles gave me a much deeper sense of purpose and belonging. I developed meaningful relationships, gained practical experience and built confidence in ways that went far beyond the classroom.
How did your program prepare you for your current role?
In the Psychology program, I developed a strong understanding of human behaviour, communication and motivation – all of which directly support my work in sales. It taught me how to listen actively, ask meaningful questions and understand what drives people’s decisions. Those skills have been incredibly valuable in building relationships with clients and creating campaigns that truly resonate with different audiences. My time at VIU also gave me a deep appreciation for community involvement through clubs and leadership roles, which aligns perfectly with my current role in radio. So much of what we do is rooted in supporting local initiatives, connecting with listeners and helping businesses grow.
Can you share an experience where one of your professors made an impact on your learning experience?
I built so many meaningful relationships with my professors during my time at VIU. Most were incredibly accessible, supportive, and always willing to listen. Some of my favourite memories are from long conversations, often while lying on the floor of Elliott Marchant’s office, where we would talk about psychology, life and everything in between. He played a big role in helping me find direction with my degree and encouraged me to pursue paths I didn’t yet have the confidence to explore. His support had a lasting impact on both my academic and personal growth.
What’s next for you?
Continuing to grow in my career in media sales while staying rooted in community-driven work. I’m passionate about helping local businesses thrive and finding creative ways to connect them with their audiences. I’m also always looking for opportunities to keep learning, whether it’s through mentorship, new projects or eventually further education. Long term, I want to keep building a career that blends strategy, connection and meaningful impact.
What are you most proud of since completing your program at VIU?
I’m proud of how I’ve stayed connected and active in the Nanaimo community. VIU played a big role in helping me build a sense of home here and it means a lot to be able to give back to the community that’s supported my growth.
What advice would you give VIU students following a similar trajectory as yourself?
Say yes to opportunities even if they feel a little outside your comfort zone! Some of the most meaningful experiences I had at VIU came from getting involved in things I didn’t originally plan for, like research, student leadership and community events. Build relationships with your professors, show up for your peers and don’t be afraid to take the lead on something new. Your time at VIU is more than just classes. It’s a chance to grow, explore and set the foundation for whatever comes next.
