What are the average class sizes?
On average, class sizes are 35. As you progress to the upper levels of your program, the average class size is even smaller. Some benefits of small class sizes include increased opportunities for group discussion, individualized feedback from professors, and more opportunities to network.
When should I apply to a program? Do I need to wait until I have completed the admission requirements?
You should apply to a program as early as possible, once applications open in October of your Grade 12 year. It's not necessary to have completed all the requirements at that time. Many programs offer conditional acceptance subject to fulfilling the requirements by a later date.
Do I need to have documents like transcripts, reference letters, resume and personal profile ready at the time of application?
Nope! Students can apply and then submit their supporting documents later. You can visit viu.ca/apply to get started.
Does VIU have extracurricular activities available for students?
Yes! VIU offers student clubs, varsity athletics, club teams, intramural sports and fitness classes. Additionally, our VIU Students’ Union offers fun events and activities throughout the year.
Can I attend a campus tour before attending VIU?
Absolutely! You can easily book a campus tour through our online booking system. Our friendly Student Ambassadors will show you areas of interest, on-campus housing and can also point out specific areas and buildings depending on your program.
Are there opportunities to upgrade my high school marks if I’m not currently eligible for my program of choice?
Yes, we offer high school upgrading either in person or online through our Adult Basic Education department. Many students who start off in upgrading progress to highly regarded graduate programs across the country, so don’t be discouraged if high school didn’t go how you wanted it to!
What opportunities will I have to put my learning into practice?
Most VIU programs offer opportunities for work-integrated learning experiences such as co-ops, practicums, internships and work experience. Many of your professors do their own research and run labs on campus that you may be able to get involved with as well.
What types of supports are available at VIU?
We offer numerous support areas to set students up for success! Some of those areas include our Career Studio, Accessibility Services, Academic Advising, Financial Aid and our Writing and Math learning centres, just to name a few! A good list is on the Find Support website.
