August 5, 2015 - 12:15pm
Meet, mingle and be inspired by local artists at work at the Art & Photography in the garden event at Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) Milner Gardens & Woodland, 10 am to 4 pm on August 8 and 9.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for residents and tourists alike to wander through our exquisite seaside garden estate, and mingle with dozens of local artists while they work,” says Geoff Ball, Executive Director of Vancouver Island University’s public garden. “It is always inspiring to see the gardens through their eyes.”
Featured artists will be working throughout the weekend in a variety of expressive media from painting, photography, pottery and watercolour. Visitors will have the chance to discuss and observe their technique, as well as purchase original artwork, photographs and art cards.
To complement this creative experience, a medley of local musicians will perform each afternoon at the pool house and on the grand lawn as visitors stroll through the garden. The Camelia Tea Room and a refreshment stand will also be open both days from 11:30 am to 4 pm.
In the spirit of the festival, each artist has donated a piece of artwork to a silent auction, which will take place over the course of the weekend. The auction will end at 4 pm on Sunday.
Weekend admission is $11 for adults and $6.50 for students. Members of Milner Gardens & Woodland, VIU students with a valid student card and children under 12 accompanied by an adult are free.
An on-site shuttle cart will be available to transport anyone with mobility concerns from the entry gate to the gardens.
All proceeds will support the continued operation of the garden and preserved woodland.
Milner Gardens & Woodland is considered one of the seven wonders of Qualicum and one of the best 10 public gardens in Canada. The 70-acre property is home to an old-growth Douglas fir forest and an estate garden featuring native and non-native plans, including more than 400 Rhododendron specimens.
Milner Gardens & Woodland is located at 2179 West Island Highway, Qualicum Beach. For more information, call 250.752.6153 or go to www2.viu.ca/milnergardens/events.asp#Art for a complete listing of artists who will participate in the Art and Photography event.
