Nanaimo receiver joins Andrew Harris as Vancouver Island Raiders to be named CJFL's top player

Jordan Yantz, Jordan Botel and Andrew Smith grabbed most of the headlines for the Vancouver Island Raiders this past season, but it was slotback Michael Schaper who was named this year's recipient of the Wally Buono Award as the player of the year for the Canadian Junior Football League.
Schaper, 21, emerged from four finalists and earned the praise of the legendary B.C. Lions general manager and vice president of football operations for his play on the field and his impact in the community.
Schaper becomes the second Raiders player to earn the award after running back Andrew Harris won it in 2009.
It is an honour Schaper is having trouble wrapping his mind around.
"It was a surreal moment, to be put in the class of the past recipients is quite the honour and quite honestly, I am still a little bit shell-shocked to consider myself in that same calibre," he said.
