VIU in the News - Cowichan students learning while taking double the credit

Local high school students take their education a cut above the high-school level, learning hair stylings techniques in a program that gives them credit with both School District 79 and with Vancouver Island University.


What education in the 21st century should look like is a topic of debate across the province, but for School District 79’s acting director of middle/secondary education, an obvious answer is found in a Duncan hair salon.


This particular hair salon is situated in a portable classroom at Vancouver Island University. Local high school students are studying to be hairdressers, simultaneously obtaining their high school diploma and a hair dressing certificate that’ll allow them to start their careers as soon as they’ve finished the K-12 system.


It’s tuition-free, too.
