May 21, 2013 - 9:02pm

Marie Armstrong has been appointed as VIU’s new University Secretary replacing Diny Van Beers who is retiring in late summer. The University Secretary is a senior policy advisor responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction and management related to the University’s system of governance.

Armstrong brings a breadth of experience to the role, including more than 27 years of experience in legal matters.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Marie into our VIU community,” says President Ralph Nilson. “I believe the wide range and depth of her experience make her an excellent candidate for this position.”

A strong leader, Armstrong has been an Associate University Secretary at the University of Waterloo since 2007 and is also a part-time Adjunct Lecturer in the political science department. Prior to working at the University of Waterloo she was a lawyer in private practice and held a variety of managerial positions related to the field of law.

Armstrong holds a law degree from the University of Windsor and a bachelor of arts from the University of Waterloo and is very community minded, using her skills and experience to support a variety of organizations.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity,” says Armstrong, “and I’m looking forward to meeting the VIU community and taking on the varied responsibilities of this role.”

Armstrong will begin her new position on August 6.
