What: Trades & Tech Showcase

When: Saturday, April 6, 10 am to 2 pm

Where: Trades Discovery Centre (Building 108), Nanaimo campus (see Nanaimo campus map).

Are you considering a career in trades? Come to the Trades & Tech Showcase on April 6 to learn more about the 20 different trades and technology programs on offer at Vancouver Island University (VIU). You can also try out an activity related to each one.

The showcase takes place on a Saturday to allow for families to participate together and runs from 10 am to 2 pm. Faculty and current students will be there to run demos, answer questions about career pathways and share more about what each program is like.

“We are excited to open our doors and highlight our offerings to people curious about careers in the trades and technology,” said Glynis Steen, Dean of the Faculty of Trades and Applied Technology. “What’s exciting about this event is the opportunity to try an aspect of each of our trades and tech. Experiencing something is so much more powerful than just reading about it.”

Some of the day’s events and activities for people to try include:

  • Cookie decorating and chip flavouring from the Culinary Arts program.
  • Mini manicures from students in the Esthetics and Day Spa program.
  • A nail pounding contest hosted by the Carpentry program.
  • A build your own planter boxes and fill them activity with the Carpentry and Horticulture programs.
  • Simulators and games from the Heavy Equipment Operator program.
  • Interactive equipment and tools display from the Heavy Mechanical Trades program.

The event is sponsored by the Canadian Home Builders Association (CHBA).

“The Canadian Home Builders Association proudly supports Vancouver Island University’s initiative to inspire students to consider careers in the skilled trades,” said Jim Zsiros, CHBA VIU President. “Together, we’re cultivating a future where craftsmanship thrives, innovation flourishes and the foundation of our communities is built on skill, dedication and ingenuity.”

The event is free and online registration is required. Register via this signup form
