FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013
Seven-year-old Alden Thom of Ladysmith was back at Vancouver Island University this week to watch students and technicians move Tyra, a 200-pound, seven-foot long sturgeon, into a new home inside VIU’s International Centre for Sturgeon Studies (ICSS).
Thom is VIU’s youngest donor and has loved sturgeon ever since his parents can remember. Two years ago, Alden donated $35 collected in twoonies from his fifth birthday party towards VIU’s sturgeon research efforts. This week, while watching the sturgeon being moved into their new home, Thom, his older brother Elwyn and grandparents Bernice and Stan Fediuk donated $100 more.
Don Tillapaugh, Director of the ICSS, thanked Alden and his family for the donation to help VIU’s sturgeon, adding that contributions of any size are significant.
Technicians and students in VIU’s Fisheries and Aquaculture program moved a total of eight large sturgeon into their new home.
