Appointment of VIU board chair and vice-chair

A message from Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Dennis Johnson

Vancouver Island University's Board of Governors is pleased to announce the appointment of Sharon Torgerson as Chair of the Board, effective May 28, 2026. She succeeds outgoing Board Chair Jamie Cassels.

Sharon Torgerson

Sharon brings more than 30 years of senior leadership experience across the public and private sectors and has extensive expertise in governance, labour relations, organizational transformation and workforce strategy. The Board also welcomes Peter Behie, King's Counsel, as incoming Vice-Chair and looks forward to the leadership and experience he will bring to the role. The Board extends its sincere gratitude to outgoing Chair Jamie Cassels and outgoing Vice-Chair Nate Bello for their dedicated leadership and service to VIU. A true sign of their commitment to the VIU’s Board’s ongoing success was their decision to jointly step down from the Chair and Vice-Chair roles one month early to allow for strong succession planning on the Board. Their contributions have helped guide the university through a period of significant change and have strengthened VIU’s commitment to serving students and communities across the region.

As Chair and Vice-Chair, Sharon and Peter will work closely with the Board of Governors and university leadership to support the university’s strategic priorities and advance VIU’s mission of providing high-quality education, research and community engagement in service to Vancouver Island and beyond.

On behalf of the university community, I congratulate Sharon and Peter on their appointments and am pleased to welcome them to these important leadership roles.
