June is Pride Month in Nanaimo and at Vancouver Island University – a time to celebrate the strength, diversity and contributions of two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual and other sexually and gender-diverse communities. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of creating welcoming, inclusive spaces where everyone feels safe and respected.
At VIU, we know that diversity strengthens our campuses and communities. Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate our 2SLGBTQIA+ community members and reaffirm our collective commitment to equity, inclusion and belonging. While Pride is rooted in celebration, it is also grounded in the ongoing work of challenging discrimination and barriers that continue to impact members of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
Creating an inclusive university is a shared responsibility. Each of us contributes to shaping a culture where people can bring their full selves to work, study and campus life. I would like to thank VIU’s Positive Space Alliance for the important work they do throughout the year to foster awareness, support and connection across our campuses. Their efforts help strengthen our community and create opportunities for learning and allyship.
I encourage all members of the VIU community to take part in this year’s Pride Month events:
- Join the Positive Space Alliance to celebrate the beginning of Pride Month by raising the Pride flag in the RBC Plaza starting at 12:15 pm on Monday, June 1. Those working at other campuses and remotely can tune in via VIU’s Facebook page. There will be speeches, Pride-themed cupcakes, music and games. VIU Pride shirts are also available for purchase in the Campus Store.
- Join the Positive Space Alliance in representing VIU by walking with us in the Nanaimo Pride Parade on Sunday, June 14. All students and employees are welcome to participate. Please email PositiveSpace@viu.ca for more information about the meeting location and time.
Whether you participate in an event, take time to learn more about the history of Pride and 2SLGBTQIA+ rights in Canada, or simply reflect on how we can continue building a more inclusive community, I encourage everyone to engage in ways that are meaningful to them.
Thank you for helping make VIU a place where people are seen, heard and celebrated for who they are.
