Mike Brown, Chair of the Vancouver Island University Board of Governors, has announced that the Board voted unanimously to reappoint Dr. Ralph Nilson for a second five-year term as President and Vice-Chancellor of Vancouver Island University (VIU).

“The Board appreciates the exceptional job Dr. Nilson has done for VIU,” said Brown. “Dr. Nilson is a man of character whose personal values reflect the values of the University.”

The Board appointed an end-of-contract review committee to assess the President’s performance and make a recommendation with respect to his reappointment. This committee was also unanimous in recommending that Nilson be reappointed.

“We are very confident in Dr. Nilson’s ability to continue to lead VIU,” said Brown. “He possesses the leadership qualities, drive and personal suitability that we believe are required to address the challenges facing the University and lead VIU into the future.”

“I am very pleased to accept this offer of a five-year renewal,” said Nilson. “We still have much work to do at VIU. I look forward to working with our Chancellor, the Board, employees, the communities on Vancouver Island, the BC Coast and our partners around the world, as we continue to provide quality post-secondary education with an aim to advance the social and economic prosperity of the region. The needs of our students and communities will be paramount as we move forward to develop responsive, relevant and innovative programs and services.”

When asked to comment on Nilson’s reappointment, VIU Chancellor Chief Shawn Atleo said, “I fully support the Board’s reappointment of Dr. Nilson. I have grown to appreciate his wise counsel and his friendship. Dr. Nilson has the very best interests of the University and our students at heart and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead.”

Nilson was appointed President in January 2007. His new agreement is a rollover contract with no salary increase.
