Tournament success underlines city's need to upgrade recreational facilities

I don't get goose bumps often, but I sure felt them on Saturday night at the Vancouver Island University gym during the gold medal game at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Womens' Volleyball Championships.
I have been in the industry for almost 10 years, covering college, hockey, high school and other events, some as big as the Grey Cup, and I can count on one hand the number of times the hair on the back of my neck stood up.
When it comes to non-professional sports that was by far the most amazing crowd I have seen at a game.
It was unreal. With the men's volleyball team painted up as VIU's own Blue Man Group, a section full of players' parents and the student body and local community completely engaged, it was deafening.
And the women delivered, beating the rival Mount Royal University Cougars 3-1.
"It was amazing, definitely the most amazing atmosphere I've played in in my life," said Mariners veteran setter Dani Smith. "Words cannot describe it and it played a huge role in our win."
