On a day when one national power fell, the Vancouver Island University Mariners made sure a second didn't.

In fact they left little to the imagination in their 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-12) dismantling of eighth ranked Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics in their first game of the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Women's Championship at VIU in Nanaimo on Thursday.

Earlier in the day the No. 6 Medicine Hat Rattlers delivered the first major upset of the tournament with a 3-2 (25-12, 25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 15-12) win over the No. 3 F.X.

Garneau Elans. Meanwhile, No. 2 Mount Royal University beat the No. 7 Bois de Boulogne Cavaliers 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-13) and the No. 4 Humber Hawks beat the No. 5 University of Fraser Valley 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 27-15).

In the opening day's prime-time match up, the Mariners blew past the Mystics in front of a packed VIU gym.
