February 29, 2012 - 5:30am

With only one week remaining until the 2012 CCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship, VIU has sold over 30 per cent of their 250 tournament passes.

"We are extremely excited to host this event and showcase the best 8 teams in Canada", says Event Manager, Mike Stefan. "Vancouver Island has always been a hotbed for women's volleyball and we are seeing that support and excitement for this event".

The VIU Mariners are going into the championship ranked # 1 in the country but the field is highly competitive, according to Mariner coach Shane Hyde. "It's a wide open event with everybody having a realistic chance at competing for gold. It should be a fun time and a great atmosphere in our gym."

The festivities begin March 7 with the awards banquet naming the all-Canadians, player of the year and coach of the year. Quarter-finals begin Thursday March 8 with games at 1, 3, 6 and 8 pm. The semi-finals are Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10 will feature the bronze medal game at 5:30 pm and gold medal game at 8 pm.
