Dear VIU community,
I’m writing with a heavy heart after learning of the tragic events in Tumbler Ridge yesterday February 10.
It is difficult to comprehend the pain that the victims’ families and loved ones are experiencing, or the impact such a sudden and devastating loss has on a close-knit community. On behalf of Vancouver Island University, I extend our deepest condolences to everyone affected, including students, staff, families, first responders, and all those supporting one another during this difficult time.
Many people across Vancouver Island and British Columbia have strong connections to northern BC communities. Some members of our VIU community may have personal ties to Tumbler Ridge while others may simply be feeling the weight of this news in a very real way. If you’re struggling, please know you are not alone, and that support is available.
To honour those impacted and to show our respect, VIU has lowered flags to half-mast across all campuses.
Counselling and wellness supports are available to both students and employees.
