The Malaspina Mariners Men's Soccer Team have won the 1998 BCCAA Provincial Championship held at The University College of the Fraser Valley last weekend. The Mariner Men will represent B.C. at the National Championship to be held at Kamloops, B.C. beginning November 4.
The Mariners defeated Okanagan University-College Lakers 1-0, in the semi-final Friday, October 30, 1998 with a goal from Jaimie Miller. This set the stage for the Malaspina Mariners to take on Capilano College in a final. One great goal by first year Mariner, Chris Block, was all it took to clinch the title.
The Gold Medal earns the Mariners a berth in the CCAA National Championships to be held at Cariboo University-College in Kamloops.
Brian Eggman was named the tournament MVP and Stefan Olcen was awarded best defender status.
The last appearance for the Men's Soccer team at the Canadian Nationals was in 1988 when they hosted the Championship. The Mariner Men won the National title last in 1983.
After their match in Kamloops, the Mariner Mens Soccer team will meet Dawson College in Quebec November 5 and then Kings College in Halifax on November 6 to complete the CCAA National Schedule.
The Mariners Women's Soccer team also put in a good showing at the University College of the Fraser Valley over the weekend by winning the Bronze Medal at the BCCAA Championship. A 2-0 loss to the University College of the Cariboo in the semi-finals placed them in the bronze medal match against Trinity Western University. A goal from defender, Teresa Nieman late in the second half, won the game and a Bronze Medal for the Mariners ending a great season for the Women's Soccer program.
