Malaspina University-College, in Nanaimo, is offering travel study courses in Italy and Southern England to study in their historical settings the forces that forged Western culture.
The four-week Italian study course takes place next spring in Florence and includes visits to Siena, San Gimignano and Rome.
The purpose of the courses is to provide an interdisciplinary examination of art, architecture, literature, music, science and philosophy," said liberal studies abroad coordinator Dr. John Black.
No reproduction or textbook can come close to the thrill of seeing in person the paintings of Da Vinci and Giotto, the sculptures of Michelangelo and Cellini, or the streets and houses that surrounded Dante, Machiavelli and Galileo as they grappled with the fundamental mysteries of human existence," Black said.
The program will include lectures, studio art sessions, visits to concerts, museums, galleries and other artistic sites. There will be 90 hours of instruction in total.
The four-week summer course in England is set amid the historic scenery of Devon and Sussex.
The works of Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy and John Fowles will come alive as students stay in Exeter, Bath, Exmoor, Dartmoor and Lyme Regis," Black said.
Students will also study the "Bloomsbury Group" at the University of Sussex, and visit Cambridge and London.
No specific previous experience is required for full participation in the travel study courses; however, students who wish to receive credit should either have completed close to two years of university-level study or else seek permission from the coordinator to participate in the course, based on previous academic performance.
Last year's travel study course to Florence was such a big success that we decided to repeat the program and include a travel course to England, next year, " said Black.
Students were in awe as they stood in places where others had stood one or two thousand years earlier. We want to provide that opportunity to more and more people each year," he said.
Cost of the Italian travel study program is from $3,995, while cost of the Southern England course is from $2,995, depending on accommodation and student status. The cost includes return airfare from Vancouver, shared accommodation, travel in Italy or England and all admissions. Meals and out-of-pocket expenses are extra.
A $500 deposit is required by December 1, 1997.
