Faculty collaborate on Meridian, a multimedia performance

March 9, 2012 - 1:03am

Kevin Mazutinec recalls the moment when he saw the potential for his fluid animated images to be part of a larger art project and creative collaboration.

Mazutinec, an Instructor/Technician in Vancouver Island University's Art and Design Department, produced Meridian, a digitally-animated abstract work that was part of Datastream 4 - Proliferating Signs and Cultural Layers.

The result is Meridian: A Multimedia Performance Event, Friday, March 16 at 7:30 pm (doors open at 7). In addition to the screening of Meridian, there will be contributions from Marian van der Zon (vocal and acoustic instruments), Justin McGrail (spoken word) and Robin Davies (soundscapes with software instruments.)

Mazutinec expects the free performance to last about an hour but the format, like the animated images, remains fluid.

“We all teach in the Faculty of Art & Humanities - representing Visual Art, Graphic Design, Media Studies, and Women's Studies. We're giving each other lots of trust and room for creativity,” says Mazutinec.

“It's been extremely energizing and the momentum has been building steadily with our mantra 'Fun? Just stop not having some.’”
