Instructors and students at Malaspina University-College’s Parksville-Qualicum Centre now have some high-tech help thanks to a recent gift from the Coastal Community Credit Union (CCCU).
A donation of $2,000 has provided a sound system for two adjoining classrooms at Malaspina’s location in the Parksville Civic & Technology Centre.
It is estimated the new system will benefit more than 2,400 students a year.
CCCU officials toured the Parksville-Qualicum facility on January 21, 2003 to hear the system in action and to officially hand over a cheque and microphone to Cheryl Dill, Site Administrator of the Parksville-Qualicum Centre.
“ This gift has made learning in our classrooms much easier,” Dill said.
“ Some instructors have soft voices and a few students found it hard to hear them over the noise of the ventilation system. Now our instructors can use a microphone to transmit through the new overhead speakers and be heard anywhere in the classroom.”
Funds from Malaspina’s Foundation helped augment the donation to enable an additional classroom to have overhead speakers and for the system to be installed in both at the same time.
“ The Coastal Community Credit Union is a long-time supporter of Malaspina students,” Dill said. “They provide annual awards and bursaries to students, and have contributed to Nanaimo’s New Library campaign. We are very thankful for their support.”
