Meet the class of 2026: Meylin Vasquez

Moving from Ecuador to Canada to finish a second degree meant adapting to a new country, a new school system and life far from home for Meylin Vasquez.

The Bachelor of Business Administration grad says her VIU experience went beyond academics – she’s grown as a person as well.

“I am most proud of completing my second degree abroad while adapting to a new country, language and academic system,” she says. “It has been a challenging but rewarding journey that has helped me grow both personally and professionally.”

Meylin came to Canada with experience in international negotiations and export logistics. She arrived at VIU through an exchange agreement with her home university, looking for a chance to expand her education internationally.

“I saw it as a unique opportunity to grow academically, experience a new culture and expand my learning beyond borders,” she says. “Participating in campus events and meeting people from different cultures made my experience enriching and memorable.”

As a marketing intern for the BC MBA Games, which was hosted at VIU’s Nanaimo campus last fall, she is grateful for the experience in organizing, promoting and planning a large event – and collaborating with different teams.

Meylin’s advice to current and future students is rooted in the same mindset that carried her through her own transition to studying abroad.

“Take advantage of every opportunity, whether it’s networking, internships or campus activities,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone because that’s where the most growth happens.”

Looking back, she would tell her first-year self to trust the uncertainty that comes with change.

“I wish I had known that it’s okay to feel uncertain at the beginning. Everything takes time and trusting the process makes the journey much more enjoyable.”

Following graduation, she plans to continue building her career in finance and eventually pursue postgraduate studies in Canada.

Meylin is grateful for her time at VIU and optimistic it will lead to more positive experiences.

“It shaped my perspective, strengthened my skills and connected me with amazing people.”
