Here are some safety tips:
More Canadians are turning to bikes and electric bikes as a great way to commute to work and school. It’s fun – a lot more fun than sitting in traffic, that’s for sure. Find out more about the different amenities available at VIU that are available to support your biking adventures. And most importantly, be safe out there!
Here are some bike safety tips everyone who cycles should know:
- Practice first: New to e-biking? Start by reading the user manual and practice riding in a controlled environment to learn how to safely operate your e-bike. If you are renting, follow the instructions provided by the rental company.
- Wear a helmet: always wear an approved safety helmet when riding an e-bike.
- Follow the rules of the road: Make sure you obey all traffic signs and signals and adhere to the rules of the road. If you don’t know what these are, check out this website: https://www.icbc.com/assets/en/DhxStHw3HmhFhbL8v150h/drivers4.pdf
- Use hand signals: safely signal intent to turn, slow down or stop by using standard hand signals.
- Watch you speed: Speed increases the likelihood of mistakes and can lead to more damage should an accident occur.
- Don’t carry bags on your handlebars! The bags can get caught in your front wheel and can lead to a serious accident.
