VIU's Parksville-Qualicum Centre made over for new Esthetics & Nail Tech programs

May 4, 2009 - 6:02am

Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) highly anticipated Esthetics & Nail Technology programs are about to begin at the Parksville-Qualicum Centre.  Rooms within the facility have received a complete makeover in preparation for courses, which start May 19, 2009.

"The instruction and facility at VIU is one of the finest, not only on Vancouver Island, but throughout the country," said Mike O’Hara, General Manager of the Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa.

The spa industry on Vancouver Island needs certified professionals to serve their sophisticated and growing clientele. VIU’s program is distinctive as it provides extensive hands-on practice through the operation of a public clinic and has a strong focus on customer service and business operations. Instructors are members of the local business community with many years of experience in the field.

Graduating students will have access to the local job market on central Vancouver Island where there is increasing demand for services from both residents and tourists.

“This program will allow these graduates to meet the needs of the ever-expanding industry on our island,” said Heather Dockendorff, Salon/Spa Consultant with Nova Beauty.

Students will graduate ready to work in a variety of settings, including day, resort, destination and cruise ship spas; hair salons; private business; with medical professionals; in sales and promotion and in the performing arts industry.

The full-time esthetics program runs four days a week for eight months with over 500 hours of ‘real life’ experience, working with the public while supervised by qualified instructors. The Nail Technology certificate takes place four nights a week in the evening and also offers a significant practical component. Like VIU’s hairdressing program, Esthetics and Nail Tech students will take appointments from the public.

Local builders and designers are completing state of the art renovations at VIU’s Parksville Campus.  Individual air extraction units attached to custom manufactured workstations and the use of tranquil colours and modern finishing have created an outstanding environment for student learning.

Applications are being accepted now and limited spaces are still available. For more information contact the Centre for Continuing Studies at 1-866-734-6252 or visit www.viu.ca/ccs/certificates.
