VIU's GivingTuesday Campaign Raises Money to Support Students in Need

Jordan Levesque, left, a VIU Bachelor of Business Administration student; Dr. Carrie Chassels, Executive Director of Student Affairs; and Ryan Coghlan, an Exploratory Studies student; are excited about the possibility of a collegiate-level hockey team coming to VIU. This year’s GivingTuesday campaign includes an option to donate to non-profit group VIU Hockey Inc.’s endeavours to get a VIU Mariners team on the ice.

The puck is set to drop on Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) 2016 GivingTuesday Campaign, which raises money in support of students.

After a record-breaking campaign that raised more than $175,000 in 2015, the 2016 GivingTuesday Campaign will take place on November 29 with the goal of raising as much money as possible to help students achieve their post-secondary education goals. Highlights of this year’s campaign include opportunities to support student refugees through the VIU International Refugee Newcomer Awards and a campaign to establish collegiate-level hockey at VIU.

GivingTuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering that falls on the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday. On this day, people are invited to get together to raise money and awareness about favourite causes and think about others.

All alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the University are invited to donate to the VIU Foundation as part of the University’s GivingTuesday campaign this year. People can direct their donations to support a specific scholarship, award or bursary, or designate it to help a particular faculty or program.

“VIU is committed to creating access to high-quality post-secondary education for all,” says William Litchfield, Executive Director of University Relations. “GivingTuesday is an opportunity to help students in our community who otherwise might not be able to attend University through a gift to the Inspiration Fund, which supports the areas of greatest need. People can also support a particular program or faculty they are passionate about.”

All donations made on GivingTuesday will have double the impact, as there is $105,000 in matching funds available to the campaign this year from the VIU Foundation, and 100% of every donation will go directly to the fund chosen by the donor.
