VIU welcomes students/parents to Discovery Days

Many grade 12 students are starting to think about life after high school.

That’s why Vancouver Island University will welcome more than 500 grade 12 students from Courtenay to Mill Bay to the Nanaimo campus for “Discovery Days” on Nov. 8, 9 and 10 .

“We’re providing an opportunity for students to explore program areas that they are considering after high school graduation,” said Joanna Hesketh, VIU’s Educational Partners Coordinator.

“We have 24 different sessions planned from every faculty on campus. Our goal is to connect grade 12 students with VIU so they can get a taste of the many different programs the University has to offer.”

A special information evening for parents of grade 12 students will take place Thursday, Nov. 10 in the Royal Arbutus Room (Building 300, above the cafeteria) from 6 to 7 pm.

“The session for parents recognizes the important role families play in the decision-making process for their child’s post-secondary choices and in the success of our students,” added Hesketh.

“University is a time to grow both intellectually and emotionally, and students will still need support, love, and guidance. Our goal is to help families understand what students may experience as they transition into their university careers and what services are available to assist them.”

Parents will be introduced to some of the VIU’s intellectual opportunities, campus communities, and student resources. Representatives from the Student Services department will provide information about admissions, deadlines, choosing a field of study and support services.

“We hope students and parents will ask questions, meet new families and friends, and enjoy their time on campus,” said Hesketh.

Students must register for Discovery Days through their high schools, however, parents do not need to pre-register for the information session.

VIU offers a wide variety of basic literacy to vocational programs, trades, and undergraduate and graduate degrees. Nov. 15 is the first day VIU starts accepting applications for university and career/technical programs beginning Sept. 2012. For information about specific programs, visit www.viu.ca
