VIU STUDENTS RECEIVE NATIONAL RESEARCH GRANTS

July 10, 2013 - 8:38am

Four Vancouver Island University students have received national awards to complete their master’s degrees.

Students Monica Shore, Niel Scobie, Kaitlyn Till and Francine Emmonds have been granted prestigious Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship Master’s Awards worth $17,500 each by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Shore, who has already completed first year of VIU’s master of arts in sustainable leisure management program, is using the award to complete a qualitative study on engagement of the arts community within the cultural planning process in Nanaimo.

VIU Media Studies graduate Niel Scobie plans to pursue a master of arts in music and culture at Carleton University in September. He will examine the cultural, socio-economic, and regional factors that have produced a diverse range of Canadian hip-hop music.

Emmonds, who recently completed a bachelor of arts degree in interdisciplinary studies at VIU, begins a master of arts in educational studies at the University of British Columbia in September. Her research focus is identifying strength-based adult basic education assessments for Indigenous learners.

VIU creative writing and journalism graduate Kaitlyn Till will use her award in September to complete the master of publishing program at Simon Fraser University.

“All of us at VIU are extremely proud of these students and what they have achieved,” said VIU President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ralph Nilson.

“Students who receive SSHRC scholarships are recognized as some of Canada’s best student researchers at post-secondary institutions across the country,” said Nilson. “Their research enhances Canada’s position as a world leader in research excellence and could possibly lead to discoveries and innovations that will benefit all Canadians.”
