VIU president sees long-term value in Education Quality Assurance designation

British Columbia’s new Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation

provides a vital tool for post-secondary students in Canada and around the

world to ensure they make the right choice for their learning environment, said

Dr. Ralph Nilson, president and vice-chancellor of Vancouver Island University.

“EQA is a symbol of quality that will strengthen the

reputation of VIU as a centre of creativity, innovation and social

responsibility,” Nilson said. “VIU is committed to excellence and providing

students from all countries with a stimulating educational experience that

enhances the quality of their lives in a setting that is second to none.”

BC is the first province in Canada to introduce quality

assurance designation for universities and other post-secondary institutions.

To earn the EQA “seal of approval”, public and private institutions must meet government-recognized

criteria.

Graham Pike, Dean of International Education at VIU, sees EQA

as one more step in reinforcing Vancouver Island as a prime destination for

students.

“UNESCO estimates there are more than two million students

currently studying outside their home country and that number is growing,” Pike

said. “We know they have a wide range of choices. EQA designation will give

students added incentive to invest in an education at VIU.”

EQA designation is intended to help students satisfy

themselves and governing bodies in their home countries that they are attending

a credible and well-respected institution.  Post-secondary institutions in B.C. are

already regulated but the system is diverse and there are a variety of

processes for assessing standards. The province recently established EQA as a

trademarked, easily recognized brand to avoid potential confusion and demonstrate

that an institution meets high standards.

The independent BC Council for International  Education will administer the designation

program for the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development.

“Students from around the globe make a significant economic

contribution to Vancouver Island communities,” Nilson said.

More than 1,200 international students are enrolled at VIU’s

four campuses. International students contribute more than $2 billion annually

to the provincial economy.

Nilson sees long-term benefits from EQA designation as it

attracts more international students. “Graduates may choose to stay in B.C. and

strengthen our skilled labour force. They will play a major role in our

economic recovery and no doubt boost the quality of the places where they

live.”
