VIU Powell River Campus Hosts 8th Annual Campus Kickoff

September 25, 2009 - 4:15am

On Friday, September 18, the Powell River Campus of VIU was abuzz with activity as students gathered together for study skills sessions.  Over 100 students from Culinary Arts, Carpentry, Welding, Adult Upgrading and University programs crowded into the gymnasium where they were welcomed by Educational Advisor, Carol Sansburn.  Principal Arlette Raaen outlined some of the opportunities available this year on campus, then a prayer was offered by Elder Elsie Paul.

The Plenary session was hosted by local improvisation group, “The Defrosted Flakes,” cracking up the audience with their rendition of skits as they took suggestions from audience members to enact characters such as a blind stripper or a clumsy belly dancer.

After a short but tasty coffee break with treats from Starbucks, students were able to choose from a variety of workshops.  Amazing Grammar Tips, Note-taking Beyond the Highlighter, Learning Styles, Finding a Career You Love, and Relaxation 101 were some of the offerings by volunteer instructors.

Student Union representatives, Patrick Barbosa and Steven Beasley bravely started their day early so they could catch the morning ferry.  Their presentation was well attended—could it be the many give-aways that were offered?  Students were appreciative of the freebies offered by the Student Union:  goody bags, a pizza lunch, and one lucky attendee received an Ipod Nano.

Students were able to get their photo I.D., log on to student accounts, and set up their wireless connections for lap tops.  Ann Trousdale from the library offered a session to introduce students to its resources and technologies.

Local businesses were generous in offering prizes, so many students received gift baskets, gift certificates and VIU wear.

Opportunities to mix and mingle with students from all the programs are not frequent, so students were able to meet fellow learners.  Plans are in place for next year’s Campus Kickoff.  If you have an idea for a workshop, contact Carol Sansburn at VIU Powell River:  Carol.Sansburn@viu.ca.
