From reflecting on many sports achievements, to medals at Skills Canada competitions and a prestigious City of Nanaimo award, here's how VIU employees and students are making the news. 

Creative kudos 

VIU Theatre Professor Leon Potter has received the Excellence in Culture award at Nanaimo’s 2026 Culture Awards. The awards celebrate the city’s art, culture and heritage, honouring those who have helped strengthen Nanaimo’s creative community. Read more from the Nanaimo News Bulletin. 

Showing off their skills 

VIU dual-credit students competed in the North Island Skills Canada Regionals and came away with several medals. Finn Gow-Hignall placed first in the culinary arts; Dustin Wesley and Aidan Crawford placed first and second in carpentry; Ross Infanti placed second and Marshall Jepson placed fourth in automotive; and AJ Cassar placed fourth for cabinetry. Legendary coaches moving on 

VIU women’s basketball head coach Tony Bryce and men’s basketball head coach Matt Kuzminski both announced they will be leaving their roles after this season. Read more from the Nanaimo News Bulletin. 

Female Team Athlete of the Year
