The mental side of youth sport
October is a busy time in youth sport, with many school and community programs underway. Dr. Jordan Herbison, a VIU Kinesiology Professor, specializes in sport and health psychology. He spends a lot of time talking with youth teams and other sports groups about the ways to optimize mental performance in team sport environments to promote effective teamwork and leadership, and enriching experiences for everyone involved. He is available to share tips on how sport organizations, coaches, parents/guardians and youth can prepare for to get the most out of sport experiences.
Bank of Canada rate cut
The Bank of Canada has lowered its key interest rate to 3.75 per cent - the largest cut since the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Charles Schell, VIU Finance Professor, is available to answer questions about impacts of this move.

Preserving feminist health history
Dr. Whitney Wood, VIU’s Canada Research Chair in Historical Dimensions of Women’s Health, is working with two research assistants, Elise Cullon and Katie Carroll, to digitize Vancouver Women’s Health Collective documents to preserve feminist health activism for future study. Wood says She said studies on women tend to focus on reproduction. Gathering and archiving this health information can help identify the historical roots of gaps in care that continue to disproportionately affect women, non-binary and gender-diverse individuals today. Wood is available for interviews. Looking to cover other topics for Women’s History Month? Wood can also speak about reproductive rights, motherhood and health.
Climate change symposium
Explore how people can take personal and collective action to help prevent extreme climate impacts during A Citizen’s Guide to Climate Success: A Climate Change Symposium. The symposium is October 26, from 9 am to 1 pm at the Nanaimo campus, Building 355, Room 203. It is free to attend and presented by Awareness of Climate Change through Education and Research. Attendees are asked to please register on Eventbrite in advance.

Our Town explores the universal human experience of growing up, falling in love and dying. It conveys powerful messages about the beauty and fleeting nature of life and the fact that people often take it for granted. Play runs October 31 to November 9 in the Malaspina Theatre. Learn more.
Scarecrow Spectacular
Experience the beauty of fall at Milner Gardens & Woodland during the second annual Scarecrow Spectacular – a fun-filled family event. The Scarecrow Spectacular runs from October 25 to 27 from 11 am to 3 pm, with viewing until 3:30 pm. Admission is $10 for adults and $6 for youth.
