Vancouver Island University is among the many organizations and communities mourning the loss of Snuneymuxw First Nation Elder Mavis Wyse.

Wyse was a popular Elder-in-Residence at VIU’s Cowichan Campus. She passed away unexpectedly Friday Feb 4.

“The faculty, staff, students and administration at VIU are heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend and Elder Mavis Wyse,” said VIU President Ralph Nilson.

“Mavis served as an Elder-in-Residence since 2008 and played an important role shaping First Nations programs and services at the VIU Cowichan Campus. She was a wonderful resource,” said Nilson. “She will be deeply missed.”

VIU Chancellor Shawn Atleo, who has family ties to Elder Wyse, also expressed deep sorrow and offered his condolences to the family and community.

“This is an extremely hard time for the community. The loss of a beloved Elder and the wisdom that is lost when they pass on impacts the community in so many ways,” said Atleo.

“I will remember Mavis as being a loving, wise and kind individual who was committed to her family, her community and to her work at VIU. Our hearts and prayers are with her family and the Snuneymuxw First Nation during this very difficult time.”

According to her VIU profile, Wyse enjoyed spending time with her family, attending cultural and war canoe events and sewing. She also displayed a strong commitment to lifelong learning.

In addition to her work at VIU, Elder Wyse spent several years working as a counsellor and then worked with the Coast Salish Employment Training Society.

Wyse is survived by her father Bill Seward, older brothers, William and Glen, son Paul and daughter-in-law Ange, along with granddaughters Brianna and Julianne and many nieces and nephews whom she adored.
