Vancouver Island University believes in building strong ties to the community.
That’s why for the third year in a row, VIU President Dr. Ralph Nilson’s office is supporting the United Way Loaned Representative initiative.
VIU Customer Service Representative Jenna Stephenson has been ‘loaned’ to United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island (UWCNVI) to assist with it’s annual fundraising campaign until December.
This week, Stephenson will launch an official workplace campaign at the Nanaimo campus to encourage co-workers to support United Way member agencies.
“Last year, students, staff and faculty at VIU raised more than $15,000 for the United Way,” said Stephenson. “Every dollar raised stays right in the community, enabling local non-profit organizations to help citizens in need through a variety of programs and services. I’m very optimistic this year’s campaign will be just as successful.”
While Stephenson’s main role is to support workplace fundraising efforts at VIU, she is also helping other local businesses conduct their own United Way campaigns.
“This year, we’re focusing on raising funds for the development of three areas in our local community,” explained Stephenson, “including healthy children and youth, strengthening families, and engaging and supporting seniors.
“I already volunteer in the community, so to be able to work with an organization like the United Way really appeals to me,” said Stephenson. “In my role as a loaned representative, I’m learning more about community organizations on the Island that are supported by the United Way and what they do. It’s great to help connect VIU to these worthwhile groups.”
VIU’s workplace fundraising campaign continues to Nov. 20. Information tables will be set up in the Welcome Centre at the Nanaimo campus Nov. 9 & 10; the upper cafeteria Nov.12 & 13; and the lower cafeteria Nov.16 & 17.
Everyone is invited to drop by between 10 am and 2 pm each day to participate in fun events, win prizes donated by campus, employees and local businesses.
“There will also be an opportunity to donate and meet representatives from organizations funded by the United Way,” said Stephenson. “I invite everyone to check out the website at viu.ca/unitedway for more information on where your dollars go and how to participate in this year’s campaign.”
If you have any questions, Stephenson can be reached at 250-729-7400 or jenna.stephenson@viu.ca.
