VIU launches photo contest

June 23, 2008 - 2:52am

Amateur shutter bugs have until August 1st to enter the “New Point of VIU” photo contest launched by Vancouver Island University (formerly Malaspina University-College).

“If you’re a student or community member over the age of 19 who loves photography, we encourage you to email us your best digital photos of Vancouver Island scenes,” said Toni O’Keeffe, Executive Director, Communications and Public Relations at VIU. “We've got some great prizes up for grabs.”

The objective of the contest is to raise the profile of VIU’s new name and highlight the beauty of Vancouver Island, O’Keeffe added. Selected images may be showcased by VIU in a variety of local media, including on the A-Channel.

Mark Herringer, Director of Marketing and Recruitment said, "We're a new university that represents the image of Vancouver Island all over the world and are looking forward to seeing how people in the communities we serve picture our home.  Hopefully, some of these photos will be able to depict our region in a way that reflects the pride that we all feel about where we live, work and study."

Individuals who meet contest eligibility requirements can enter up to three photos. Photos will be judged on uniqueness, style, visual elements, composition, photographic quality, and artistic merit.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place photos. The top prize winner will receive something from each of VIU’s four regions (Nanaimo, Cowichan, Parksville/Qualicum and Powell River) including:

  • a 30-minute West Coast Air helicopter tour of Nanaimo for two

  • one night for four at the Iguana Ranch in Duncan with dinner, breakfast, and a choice of sauna, hot tub and campfire evening or a summer tubing adventure on the Cowichan River

  • one night stay for two and two day passes to the Grotto Spa at Tigh-Na-Mara Resort in Parksville

  • two nights for two at Desolation Resort, Powell River (off season)

  • $500 tuition voucher for VIU

The second place winner receives a VIU prize pack and a $400 tuition voucher, while the third place winner gets a VIU prize pack and a $250 tuition voucher (some restrictions apply)
