VIU Fest offers family fun for all ages.
Spend a Saturday afternoon at the Nanaimo campus for VIU Fest.
On Saturday, October 24, Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) biggest community festival returns.
VIU Fest is a free, all-ages event featuring hands-on learning, interactive activities and family-friendly entertainment. It’s also packed with opportunities to explore VIU programs and connect with professors and students. One future student will have the chance to win up to $10,000 toward tuition and food for their first year of studies. There will also be lots of other prizes and giveaways.
“VIU Fest is your opportunity to learn more about Vancouver Island University and what goes on at our campus,” said Richard Horbachewski, Associate Vice-President, External Relations. “Whether you want to sample delicious food, are looking for free fun activities for your kids, want to hear about the latest research happening in your community or are curious about VIU programming and how it can help you achieve your career goals, we’ve got something for everyone.”
Highlights include:
- Pop-up classrooms: Get a taste of life as a VIU student with 30-minute class sessions. Offerings include a nursing simulation, button making with graphic design, culinary mini-competitions, business jeopardy and much more. Browse the full list and register.
- Trades hub: Try operating a mini excavator, get a mini manicure or hair tinsel treatment, watch sugar sculpting demos and sample chocolate-dipped profiteroles.
- Kids Zone: Enjoy bouncy castles, face painting, a climbing wall, family story time and more.
- Science Mall: Participate in hands-on demos, tour the Natural History Museum and more.
- Future Students Lounge: Join a campus tour and visit the Future Student Lounge to learn more about VIU and our programs. Apply to VIU during the event and have your application fee waived.
- Food and community offerings: Have a bite to eat from food trucks and VIU Food Services, browse the Indigenous Artists’ Market and visit community booths.
New this year, Culinary Arts students have teamed up with Culinary Team Canada to offer a top chef experience. Participants are paired with a chef, given a mystery box of ingredients and compete together in a mini culinary competition. Another exciting addition is Play It Forward, a “gear grab” event run by Nursing students. Free sports equipment will be available for local families to pick up during the event.
“Most of the activities are inside, so rain or shine, we’ll have lots of things to do,” said Horbachewski. “Last year more than 4,000 community members joined us and we’re hoping for even more this year!”
Free parking is available all day on campus. More information can be found on the VIU Fest website, which will include a full schedule and activity map closer to the event.
