Hairdressing students and their clients at the Nanaimo campus were among the Vancouver Island University participants in British Columbia’s province-wide earthquake drill on Jan. 26.
VIU’s Health and Safety Services Department encouraged employees, faculty and students in Nanaimo and regional campuses in Cowichan, Parksville/Qualicum and Powell River to take part in the emergency preparedness exercise.
More than 460,000 participants throughout BC registered to practise safety measures and learn more about measures to cope with the aftermath of a major disaster.
In addition to the 10 am drill, a lunch-hour presentation by Owen Peer of the Earth Science Department covered the nature of earthquakes on Canada’s West Coast and what residents need to have on hand to be prepared at home, work and during daily transportation whether by car, bike, bus or on foot.
