Vancouver Island University (VIU) has joined three other B.C. post-secondary institutions for the first time to co-host the “Ready, Set, Hire Career Exposition” March 5 at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
VIU has partnered with Camosun College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Langara College to host the new business career exposition. The event will bring business students face-to-face with up to 40 different companies doing business globally. Recruiters from these organizations will be looking for the best and brightest amongst post-secondary business students and graduates. Attendees can also attend workshops throughout the day.
Wale Banjoko, a Master in Business Administration (MBA) student at VIU, says he plans to be among the 1,000-plus students and alumni expected to attend.
“This is a great opportunity to network, he says. “As an international student, having the opportunity to network with some of the biggest Canadian companies is not to be missed.”
Debra Yang, also in VIU’s MBA program, says she sees the Career Exposition as a chance to extend her learning beyond the classroom.
“This is a good opportunity to get to know Canadian business norms and culture,” she says. “It's a good place for us to learn something about Canada’s real business world. It's more vivid than what we learn from the textbooks and the classes.”
Exhibitors in attendance at the career exposition include companies in finance and banking, real estate, insurance, human resources, retail, accounting, government and the tourism sector.
Dr. Dave Twynam, Dean of the Faculty of Management at VIU, says this new partnership between VIU and three other leading post-secondary institutions in B.C. offers a valuable opportunity to both students and alumni attending and the businesses and organizations that sign on as exhibitors.
“This can be the first step for students and alumni in developing important relationships and contacts with businesses seeking top notch talent,” Twynam said. “At the same time, it’s a chance for businesses involved to meet talented, motivated, and skilled individuals seeking experience and great opportunities in the working world.”
Students and alumni from the four participating post-secondary institutions who are interested in registering can visit http://www.readysetcareerexpo.ca/ to learn more. Opportunities for businesses to exhibit at the career fair are also available.
