The training and hours of practice are rigorous. The
international competition will be tough. But with their sights on professional
careers, Vancouver Island University Faculty of Management students are ready
to take on a week-long series of tough business challenges at Concordia
University starting Feb. 21.
The John Molson Undergraduate Case Competition at the
Montreal campus has attracted 20 teams from universities across Canada and the
United States as well as overseas from Dublin, Budapest, Singapore and Bangkok.
“We had tryouts in late November,” said Faculty of
Management Professor Chris Jaeger. “Since then, the team has been doing a lot
of practising and preparing.”
Jaeger and the team, Colby Althouse, Jason McKinnon, Jenna
Pozar and Brett Smalley, fly to Montreal Sunday where they will face the pressure
of coming up with solutions to a series of business challenges.
“Problems are drawn from the real world. Students have three
hours to read the case and come up with a presentation offering a solution,”
Jaeger said.
After three preliminary rounds, the teams will be given a
more daunting challenge and have 24 hours to make a final presentation.
Students on the team do not get extra credits but the event
is a valuable learning experience. Aside from the benefits of being coached,
the students have taken on the challenge of fundraising to help pay for their
trip.
“Beyond that, students will experience what it means to
behave on a professional level for the week. They will be ambassadors for VIU
and they will be able to compare their educational experiences with the other
competitors,” Jaeger said.
