Starbucks chosen because it best meets needs identified by VIU Community

Vancouver Island University (VIU) students, staff and faculty at the Nanaimo Campus can get their coffee fix at the new Starbucks opening on Monday, October 30, 2017.

VIU will be the operator of the licensed Starbucks, which will be open Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm, and 9 am to 5 pm on weekends.

Starbucks was chosen because it best meets the needs identified in the 2015 Food Services Survey completed by nearly 2,000 students, staff and faculty, says Carol Desilets, Director of Ancillary Services. The survey found that the most-visited off-campus food service outlet was Starbucks, and the top choice for on-campus service was a café. Respondents also wanted more variety, fair trade-certified coffee and longer hours. Starbucks fulfills all these requirements and also employs VIU Canadian Union of Public Employees staff and VIU students.

“Operating the business ourselves gives us more control over hours of operation so we can offer more services on evenings and weekends,” says Desilets. “We believe the Starbucks will meet the needs identified in the survey.”

To celebrate the opening, VIU is having a fun draw with Starbucks gift cards up for grabs. To get your name in the running, post a picture to Instagram of you enjoying a Starbucks beverage with the #VIUStarbucks hashtag between October 30 and November 10. Also watch for random gift card handouts.
