The Centre for Continuing Studies at Vancouver Island University (VIU) is pleased to announce the launch of two new certificate programs in Esthetics and Nail Technology. The programs will begin in May 2009 and will be held at VIU’s Parksville /Qualicum Centre.
“Due to the boom in the spa industry, there has been demand for esthetics programs in our area for several years,” said Jennifer Merner, program coordinator at VIU. “We are pleased to be able to offer this training to our local students, eliminating the need to travel to other parts of the Island to participate.”
The VIU Esthetics program is a full-time, eight month program that includes personal and professional development, business basics, anatomy, skin care, skin ecology, skin physiology, manicure, pedicure, hair removal, client care, facials, relaxation massage, body treatments and more. Training includes “real life” hands-on practical experience with the public as clients while supervised by qualified instructors. The program will be offered 9:30-4:30pm Tuesday-Saturday with some evening hours during the clinic sessions.
The Nail Technology program will be offered part-time in the evening to accommodate individuals who work full-time and will be approximately four months in length. Students will gain the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary to work as a nail technician, specifically on clients’ hands and feet. Graduates of the program will be ready to join a growing industry and be on the leading edge of fashion and trends in nail art.
“Employers from the industry are struggling to find qualified candidates to fill voids in this industry,” said Merner. “Candidates who take advantage of this educational opportunity will be job ready to fulfill the increasing demand on the Island and throughout BC.”
