The university is moving forward with strength thanks to a successful financial strategy.

Vancouver Island University (VIU) has reached a significant financial milestone – a balanced budget. And the institution is on track for continued financial stability over the next three years.

On May 28, VIU’s Board of Governors approved the university’s 2026-27 budget, which projects a $1-million surplus. The 2025-26 year closed with a $5.3-million surplus, confirming that VIU’s financial strategy is working. The 2026-27 budget builds on that momentum.

“The balanced budget is a result of deliberate, strategic action and it reflects hard work by VIU employees. This didn’t happen by accident,” said Dr. Dennis Johnson, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor. “The operational changes we’ve made ensure strong financial footing for the future.”

The 2026-27 budget was developed in a challenging environment shaped by ongoing volatility in international student enrolment and increased competition for domestic students. The university continues to face rising costs due to inflation, outdated technology replacement and deferred building maintenance.

“VIU has taken decisive action to strengthen the university’s financial position while remaining focused on our core mission of serving students and communities in our region,” he said. “We are building a more sustainable and resilient institution that is better positioned to respond to change, support learners and invest strategically in the future.”

VIU will continue to pursue financial sustainability through active budget management, organizational efficiency and strategic decision-making. All decisions will focus on the needs of students and the communities VIU serves.

Johnson said VIU is grateful for the support of the provincial government as it navigated a return to balanced budgets.

“VIU is no longer playing defense,” he said. “We’re investing in what comes next, for our students, our region and the long-term health of this institution. The tireless work of the past few years has earned us the ability to move ahead with real momentum and a clear vision for what comes next.”
