Vancouver Island University recently announced the winners of the first VIU President’s Scholarships for Continuing Students. The awards are given to the top academic student in each faculty after completion of their third semester. The inaugural scholarships go to Brynn Griswold in Education, Victoria Luxford  in Social Sciences,  Alayne Seefried in Health and Human Services , Lori-Ann Shibish in Management, Jessica Skelton in Arts & Humanities and Robyn Spilker in Science & Technology.

“I’m very proud that we can offer these awards,” said VIU President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ralph Nilson. “The scholarships provide full tuition at VIU and are renewable for an additional two years if recipients keep their grades up. These students are working hard and it’s nice to recognize them and assist them in being able to concentrate on their studies.”

The awards are designed to encourage and support VIU’s top scholars to continue and complete their studies locally.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity, without a doubt, and it has opened a lot of doors for me” said Skelton, who had been planning to transfer to pursue a degree in Journalism, but with the new funding will stay at VIU. “It changed the path I was going to take and it’s going to change my future.”

“It’s nice to be recognized for academics and all the hard work I’ve done.”
