VIU adopts Project Hero to support families of Canadian Forces personnel

December 8, 2010 - 1:20am

Vancouver Island University is joining a nationwide effort to provide financial aid to children of Canadian Forces personnel killed while serving in an active mission.

VIU will provide up to eight semesters of tuition for students who qualify for support through Project Hero, an educational initiative inspired by retired General Rick Hillier and Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Reed.

“I’m extremely proud that Vancouver Island University is taking part in Project Hero to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of the men and women who serve in Canada’s Armed Forces,” said VIU President and Vice-Chancellor Ralph Nilson.

“This is a tangible way that we can support families suffering from a tragic loss and hopefully ease some of their burden.”

To be eligible, the recipient must be the dependant of a Canadian Forces personnel deceased while serving in an active mission, under the age of 26, registered as a full-time undergraduate student at VIU, meet the requirements for entry to the academic program and maintain satisfactory academic standing in the program.

Close to 60 Canadian colleges and universities are participating in Project Hero. The scholarship will be available at VIU starting in January 2011.
