Visual art students from Vancouver Island University (VIU) have been selected to display and sell their work at the One of Kind Show at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver Nov. 20 - 23rd.
“The One of a Kind show is a massive and hugely popular sale of original art and craft work by over 200 different artists from Vancouver to Washington and beyond,” said Gregory Ball, Chair of VIU’s Visual Arts department. “It’s the first time this event is being held in Vancouver. It’s been so popular with audiences in Toronto, New York, and Chicago that extra shows have been added to accommodate demand.”
Visual Arts students will showcase their work as part of a booth display in the BC school section of the exhibition.
“Our students are very excited,” said Ball. “They’re looking forward to curating, hanging and selling their work to thousands of people who attend the show. This kind of event really puts the VIU Visual Art department on the map.”
Third year student Tani Hamagishi-Allen, who is pursuing a BA with a double minor in Visual Arts and Business, said it’s “the opportunity of a lifetime.”
“I’m just beginning to grasp just how much potential this opportunity has to offer,” she said. “It’s the first time the exhibition will held on the west coast and there will be over 200 contemporary North American artists showcasing their works. This is a great opportunity to see the current state of the art world and further my understanding of the business behind art.”
Ball received a call in June from the show’s coordinator Stephanie Rodrigues asking if VIU would be interested in submitting a proposal.
“I felt we had a very good chance and that our application, on the strength of our student artwork, would be accepted, and it was.”
Admission is $10 which grants attendees access to ceramics, jewelry, clothing, textile art, furniture, painting, drawing, printmaking and more. All items are original and hand made, hence the name “One of A Kind”. The show/sale will be open Nov. 20-22 nd from 10 am to 9 pm and Nov. 23 from 10 am to 6 pm.
