Upper Level Theatre Students group stages Jane Martin’s Talking With

Vancouver Island University third and fourth-year Theatre


students present Talking With at Malaspina Theatre located on the


Nanaimo campus April 1-3.

Talking With by Jane Martin is a series of monologues


about women in different places in their lives.  The play points out that even


though all these women are different—and some of them are really different—they


all have basic human needs and in this respect, they are no different from each


and every one of us.   

Each piece in this play is acted by one member of the


ensemble and directed by another. Every member has shared not only in the


running of the play but also in producing the event itself.  All decisions


made, beginning with the choice of play, have been a group effort.  

Upper Level Theatre Students have gained experience onstage


and backstage. The intention of this production is to take what has already


been taught and use it to present a scripted piece of work in a professional


manner and send a message.

Wendy Karpuik, one of the ensemble members as well as the


overall director, says, “We hope you come out and see this show; enjoy what you


see, and leave feeling good about supporting a cause that has made an impact on


so many women and the families and friends who love them.”

The goal is to give back to VIU as well as the community


that has supported the students as well as the arts.  Proceeds from the


production of the play, including a Gala Night with a silent auction, will go


to the Breast Cancer Foundation and the Mike Monych scholarship fund. 

Upper Level Theatre Students is a newly developed group of


third-year and fourth-year students taking a BA Minor in Theatre. The


collection of people involved this year hopes that future Theatre students will


follow in their footsteps and continue to help the community through their


passion and craft.
